Combating terrorism – cooperation without boundaries

On October 31, the sixth international conference on “Combating terrorism – cooperation without boundaries” was held in Tashkent by the Executive Committee of Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure of Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

It was attended by SCO members, observers, as well as delegations of the dialogue partner countries, representatives of international organizations and research centers.

Among the participants of the conference are the SCO Secretary-General R.Alimov, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism V.Voronkov, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan D.Akhatov, Head of the OSCE Action Against Terrorism Unit A.Avakov, Vice-President of the International Committee of the Red Cross G.Carbonnier.

The regional antiterrorist structure is achieving effective results in strengthening security in the world and maintaining peace. It carries out large-scale work on combating terrorism, religious extremism, separatism, the illegal trade in weapons and drugs, transnational organized crime.

The structure in the course of its activities last year prevented a number of terrorist acts, put an end to activities of more than 50 terrorist groups, facilitated the detention of 150 terrorists who were on international wanted list. It also conducts successful activities on identifying and preventing the use of the Internet for subversive purposes. Last year, 80 thousand websites were prevented, which absorbed over 500 thousand materials with disruptive and destructive ideas, 360 websites of terrorist and banned religious organizations. A criminal case has been initiated against 122 persons operating on these Internet resources.

Today, the process of integration is under way in the activities of the anti-terrorist structure. India and Pakistan that have become SCO members began to take an active part in its work. This, in turn, further increases the chances of the SCO to achieve security and stability.

At the sectional meeting of the conference, devoted to issues of detecting and preventing new threats to security, views were exchanged on international cooperation, development of an effective mechanism for preventing modern challenges.

Preventing extremist, subversive and terrorist activities requires compliance with international legal norms. Regular sessions were devoted to these issues. The need for complying with law enforcement practice and legislation in the fight against terrorism and other threats, international humanism principles was noted.

On November 1, the conference will continue its work. At the event, participants will exchange experience on achieving peace and stability in the SCO space, fighting terrorism and extremism, eliminating their consequences.

Meeting with UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office delegation

On November 1, 2018, a meeting with Deputy Director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia of the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office Rupert Ainley was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

The sides discussed development prospects of relations between Uzbekistan and the UK, holding joint events, including bilateral meetings and negotiations at various levels.

It was noted that sides are preparing to hold a regular meeting of Uzbekistan – British Council on trade and industry in Tashkent, which is designed to intensify trade-economic, investment relations and lead to concrete results.

British Ambassador to Uzbekistan Christopher Allan attended the negotiations.

Meeting with Germany’s parliamentary delegation

On October 31, 2018, meeting with “Germany – Central Asia” Parliamentary Group of Bundestag of the Federal Republic of Germany led by its Chairman Manfred Grund was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

At the meeting, the state and prospects of relations between Uzbekistan and Germany, primarily between the Oliy Majlis and Bundestag, cooperation issues in the field of legislative support for further development of political, trade-economic, investment, cultural-humanitarian ties were discussed.

It was noted that both sides are interested in successful holding of Uzbekistan – Germany summit in 2019, which will raise the comprehensive dialogue between Uzbekistan and Germany to a qualitatively new level.

The sides also exchanged views on other issues on the bilateral agenda.

Germany’s Ambassador Gunter Overfeld attended the meeting.

Uzbekistan delegation to attend the forthcoming meeting of the Council of Heads of Governments of the CIS

On November 2, 2018, the delegation of the Republic of Uzbekistan led by the Prime Minister Abdulla Aripov will attend the regular meeting of the Council of Heads of Governments of the Commonwealth of Independent States, in Astana.

Heads of governments will discuss current issues of further development of multilateral cooperation within the CIS, sign a package of documents aimed at expanding legal framework of cooperation in specific areas.
