In the coming years, Uzbekistan intends to build a new gas chemical complex (GCC), which will form the basis of the region’s largest technological cluster

At present, Uzbekneftegaz jointly with foreign partners has started working out a project to create a technological cluster in the regions by building a modern gas chemical complex and developing on its basis related industries aimed at producing goods with higher added value.

Within the framework of the technological cluster, it is planned to build a GCC with a processing volume of 1.3-1.5 billion cubic meters of gas based on the technology of MTO (methanol to olefins) and production of 200,000-250,000 tons of polypropylene, 100 thousand tons of ethylene-propylene rubber, 100,000 tons of polyethylene terephthalate and ethylene vinyl acetate, 100-150 thousand tons of ethylene glycol and polyethylene.

“Also, on the basis of public-private partnership it is planned to build more than 10 plants for processing polymers with production of up to 300 thousand tons of finished goods. The total cost of the project will be approximately $ 4.25 billion, of which $ 3.5 billion is the construction of the GCC. Uzbekistan is ready to invest 30% of its own funds in the project, and 70% will come as foreign investments, loans,” said Ulugbek Sayidov, first deputy chairman of the board of Uzbekneftegaz.

In the new complex, modern technology from one of the leading American companies, Honeywell UOP, can be used. Based on the results of the development and approval of the preliminary feasibility study of the project, the forms of further cooperation with American partners will be discussed as a licensor of the MTO technology.

In addition, recently, Uzbekneftegaz and Honeywell UOP reached an agreement on the use of MTO and Separex technologies in the oil and gas sector of Uzbekistan.

It is stipulated in the Memorandum of Understanding, under which the Americans will conduct a pilot test of the Separex gas separation unit at one of Uzbek enterprises. If the results are positive, the issue of introducing this technology into other gas processing facilities of the country will be worked out.

Separex membrane systems are used to remove acid gas and water from natural gas. The systems are supplied on a block basis with spirally mounted membrane elements. As the specialists of the manufacturer note, the advantages of these membrane systems, as compared to conventional processes based on solvents, are the improvement of the quality of the processed natural gas, as well as the reduction of capital and operating costs in the gas processing course.

It is worth reminding that more than half of the investments attracted to the economy of Uzbekistan are in the oil and gas industry. The volume of capital investments in 2016 amounted to $ 2.99 billion, and by the end of last year the figure reached $ 3.63 billion, of which $ 2.65 billion were direct foreign investments and loans.
